That description is short and it already contains the whole problem. This compound arrived on a body composition site through a vendor catalogue rather than through any research connecting it to muscle, and the catalogue implies a shared purpose that the science does not share.
The molecule it came from
Tuftsin is a naturally occurring short peptide fragment, derived from an antibody, with described roles in immune signalling. Selank is a synthetic analogue built from it, modified to be more stable than the parent fragment.
That lineage is worth knowing for one reason. It shows the compound came out of a therapeutic development programme aimed at the nervous and immune systems, not out of any effort to influence physique. Everything about the evidence base follows from that starting point.
What is Selank approved for, and where
In Russia, it is approved as a medicine and used for anxiety related indications. That approval rests on a dossier assessed by a national regulator, and there is genuine clinical research behind it: studies in patients with anxiety disorders reporting symptom improvement, including work comparing it against benzodiazepine treatment. The registered form is intranasal.
Nowhere else. There is no marketing authorisation in the United States, the European Union or the United Kingdom, and there is no genuine registered Western trial of the compound at all.
Both halves need saying together, because each half alone is misleading. Presenting Russian registration as equivalent to a Western approval overstates what a reader can verify. What Selank is not, for a lifting audience
Four claims worth refusing explicitly, because each of them appears somewhere in the retail description.
It is not anabolic. No study in rats, in cell culture or in humans has measured muscle mass, cross sectional area, strength or muscle protein synthesis after administration. Nothing in the literature describes an action on the myostatin pathway.
It is not a performance compound. No published study has administered it to trained subjects, run it alongside exercise, or measured any performance outcome in any species.
It is not a general nootropic. Some Russian work has examined cognitive measures alongside anxiety outcomes, and what is reported there is narrower than the broad cognitive enhancement claim that circulates online.
It is not a Western investigational drug. Trial registry searches return unrelated studies that happen to mention the term, and no trial of this peptide exists in those registries.
The two words that do most of the damage
Two labels attach to this compound online, and both mislead.
"Nootropic" implies a class of substances taken by healthy people to improve cognition. The research programme here was psychiatric, the outcomes measured were anxiety symptoms in patients, and the cognitive findings that exist sit alongside those outcomes rather than standing on their own. Calling it a nootropic imports a purpose the studies did not have.
"Peptide" implies a category with shared properties, which is about as informative as calling two drugs molecules. Peptides in a vendor catalogue include healing compounds studied in injured rats, secretagogues acting on hormone release, and metabolic peptides acting on fuel handling. They share a chemical class and nothing else, and nothing established about one member transfers to another.
Both words are doing the work that evidence normally does, which is the reason to notice them.

Rat studies have reported effects on brain serotonin metabolism and on expression of brain derived neurotrophic factor after administration. Why lifters meet it at all
Two reasons, and only one of them is legitimate.
The illegitimate one is proximity. Vendors list this peptide next to healing peptides, secretagogues and metabolic compounds, and readers infer a shared category. Shelf position is a merchandising decision.
The legitimate one is indirect and worth stating precisely. Lean mass over decades is protected largely by continuity of training, and continuity is broken as often by stress, anxiety and poor sleep as by injury. A person training through an anxious, badly slept quarter usually trains less and worse, and that lost work eventually shows up in body composition. So an effective anxiolytic could, in principle, protect the consistency that protects muscle.
The honest version of that hypothesis carries conditions worth naming. It would need the person's training to be genuinely limited by anxiety or sleep rather than by programming, recovery or effort, which describes a minority of cases. It would need the compound to work in someone without a diagnosis, which has not been tested. And it would need the effect to translate into sessions completed rather than into a feeling, which no study has measured. Each condition is plausible alone, and their conjunction is where an argument turns into speculation.
That reasoning is coherent, and every link after the first is untested for this compound. No study has followed people using it and measured training adherence, session quality, recovery or lean mass.
